Boy band Mirror to usher in 2022 in free HK concert

Woohoo! 2022 will be launched in Hong Kong with a live FREE concert from the city’s top boy band Mirror.

They’ll sing and dance in the open space on the Central waterfront, the Tourist Board announced today.

The countdown will be on the massive screen which forms the front of the new M Plus museum in Kowloon.

The announcement is HUGE news for a large swathe of Hong Kong’s population today: their fans, although mostly female, stretch from primary school age to “mature” women, only I’m not 100 per cent sure that that’s is the right word.

But it’s all good wholesome fun, so no one’s complaining.

1,500 pairs of tickets to attend live will be given away at zero cost with a lottery system, but the concert will be livestreamed free of charge to the rest of Hong Kong too.

Who are these boys? They were contestants on one of those elimination-style music shows. One by one, they were knocked out of the show and one of young men won.

But then the TV company decided to make ALL the top performers for the show into a single band—and since then have dominated the local entertainment scene.

A FEW DEEPER QUESTIONS

• Who’s the corporation behind the? If you check out the ownership of the TV station which engineered all this, ViuTV, you eventually get to Richard Li, son of Hong Kong’s famous billionaire, Li Ka-shing.

• Are they musicians? Not really. They mostly came up through dance schools, and they sing and jump around prettily but a backing band provides the music. Some of them rap.

• Is anyone else playing at the concert? Actually, quite a few artists will be performing through the evening (see pic below), including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, but for the average Hongkonger, all eyes will be on Mirror.

• Will I like it? If you’re a Black Sabbath fan, no. But if you ever enjoyed Cantopop such as Anita Mui concerts, as this writer did, you might like it.
