HONG KONG TV presenter Victoria Tang Pui Kai (鄧蓓佳) wanted to do something positive for her community—so she decided to write a book featuring the success stories of the city’s colorful individuals. These are “heart-warming and inspiring stories,” she said.
The collection, recently published, is called “I Love Hong Kong: Unlocking Infinite Possibilities with Our Strengths”(《我愛香港——憑優勢開啟無限可能》).
The people featured in the book range from entrepreneurs who created successful businesses to members of well-known Hong Kong families.
The volume was featured at the Hong Kong Book Fair – an event legendary for its popularity, with huge queues of people lining up to get inside. The fair was held from 17 to 23 July at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, and the book was featured with an on-stage event, featuring Ms Tang and other Hong Kong notables.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ms Tang graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a Masters in Media in 2020. She then became a financial news presenter on TVB Jade’s ‘Finance Magazine’ (財經透視).
She translated an English language book on Marilyn Monroe, but this is the first book she has written herself, she said. She was nervous, she told the audience at the book launch.
She also hoped that after reading the book, readers would have a deeper understanding of the development of Hong Kong and the country, and the role of this city as a “super-connector”.
The book features interviews with nine people from various fields, including former Chief Executive Bernard Chan (陳智思); former Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok (黎棟國); leading technologist Duncan Chui (邱達根); founder of Acacia Bio-technology Dr Ricky Chiu (招彥燾); President of Alibaba Li Jie (李捷); Partner of Yiu Wing Live Cheung Wing-tat (張永達); founder of Centaline Property Agency Limited Shih Wing Ching (施永青); Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Anthony Y.H. Fung (馮應謙); and Kimberly Kwok (郭曉芝), the third generation member of the Kwok family of Sun Hung Kai Properties.
“If you feel that the book resonates with you, or if you are moved or curious, I encourage you to combine reading a lot of books with travelling a lot of miles, to gain a deeper understanding of the development of Hong Kong and the country, and to go to Hong Kong and different parts of the motherland to experience the history and culture and understand the reality of the country, and to have more exchanges and make more friends,” Tang said.
The book ‘I Love Hong Kong – Unlocking Infinite Possibilities with Our Strengths’ is published by Joint Publishing and is available at bookshops in the city and online.
