Amazon is now a Chinese sales outlet.
A study of which communities actually provide the goods sold on the famous e-commerce site shows southern China has quietly become dominant.
“Out of the top 20 cities with the most Amazon sellers, more than half are in China, with Shenzhen leading by a massive margin, hosting over 102,000 sellers,” said a report by Smartscout Insight, an e-commerce newsletter.
Vertical integration is the secret of success of the “miracle city” of Asia.
“Shenzhen’s prominence is largely due to its position as a manufacturing powerhouse, allowing sellers direct access to production and supply chains,” the newsletter said.
But other Chinese cities are following its lead. “Cities like Guangzhou, Putian, and Dongguan also reflect this trend, with their deep integration into the global e-commerce ecosystem, making it easier for Chinese brands to offer direct-to-consumer products at competitive prices,” it added.
Other cities with significant participation are from the United States, the study showed, with Brooklyn in first place, followed by Miami.
Some Chinese cities which people in the west are unlikely to have heard of, such as Zhengzhou, Quanzhou and Taiyuan, are ahead of New York.
